What is the most importantinformation I should know about albuterol and ipratropium inhalation?

* Combivent is prescribed for people with chronic obstructivepulmonary disease (COPD) if they are already taking one airway-openingmedication and need another. The products two active ingredients actin distinctly different ways. Ipratropium quells airway-closing spasmsin the bronchial walls. Albuterol relaxes the muscles in the walls,permitting them to expand. When used together, the two ingredientsprovide more relief than either can do alone.
* Overuse of this product can be fatal. Do not increase thedose or frequency without your doctors okay. If you find thatCombivent is becoming less effective, that your symptoms are gettingworse, or that you need the product more frequently than usual, seeyour doctor immediately.

What is albuterol andipratropium inhalation?

* Albuterol is a bronchodilator. It relaxes musclesin the airways, which improves breathing. Ipratropium is used toprevent bronchospasm, which narrows airways. By preventing narrowing ofthe airways, ipratropium increases air flow to the lungs.
* Albuterol and ipratropium inhalation is used totreat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
* Albuterol and ipratropium inhalation may also beused for conditions other than those listed in this medication guide.

Special warnings?

* Instead of opening the airways, Combivent sometimes causesthem to close. This reaction--which can be life-threatening--is mostlikely to occur after the first use of a new canister. If you suffersevere breathing difficulties after a dose of Combivent, stop using itand see your doctor immediately.
* The albuterol in Combivent has been known to raise heartrate and blood pressure. It can also cause changes in heart rhythm. Ifyou have a weak heart, an irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, orany other heart problem, youll need to use Combivent with caution. Ifit triggers heart-related symptoms, check with your doctor at once. Theproduct may have to be discontinued.
* A severe allergic reaction can follow the first dose ofCombivent. Possible symptoms include swelling of the face, mouth, orthroat hives, skin rash, breathing difficulties, or even collapse.Seek emergency care immediately if these symptoms occur.
* The ipratropium in Combivent can aggravate glaucoma (highpressure in the eye), prostate enlargement, and urinary difficulties.The albuterol it contains can cause problems for people with epilepsy,diabetes, or an overactive thyroid. Use Combivent with caution if youhave any of these conditions.
* If the Combivent aerosol gets in your eyes, it can causeeye pain or discomfort, blurred vision, visual halos, colored images,or high pressure in the eye. Check with your doctor immediately if youdevelop any of these problems.

How should I use albuterol andipratropium inhalation?

* This medicine usually comes with patient directions. Readthem carefully before using this medicine. If you do not understand thedirections or you are not sure how to use the inhaler or nebulizer, askyour doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to show you how to use it.
* When you use the inhaler for the first time, or if you havenot used it for more than 24 hours, the inhaler may not give the rightamount of medicine with the first puff. Therefore, before using theinhaler, prime it by spraying the medicine into the air three times.The inhaler will now be ready to give the right amount of medicine whenyou use it.
* When you use the inhalation solution, make sure you use ajet nebulizer that is connected to an air compressor with a good airflow. Use a face mask or mouthpiece to inhale the medicine.
* Keep the spray away from the eyes because this medicine maycause irritation or blurred vision. This is especially important forpeople with glaucoma. Closing your eyes while you are inhaling thismedicine may help keep it out of your eyes.

What happens if I miss a dose?

* Use the missed dose as soon as you remember.However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose,skip the missed dose and use the next one as directed. Do not use adouble dose of this medication.
* If you are using albuterol and ipratropium on anas needed basis, use the missed dose when it is needed, then wait theprescribed amount of time before using another dose.

What happens if I overdose?

* Seek emergency medical attention if an overdoseis suspected.
* Symptoms of an overdose of albuterol andipratropium include angina or chest pain, irregular heartbeats or afluttering heart, seizures, tremor, weakness, headache, nausea, andvomiting.

What should I avoid whileusing albuterol and ipratropium inhalation?

* Avoid situations that may trigger an asthmaattack, such as exercising in cold, dry air smoking breathing indust and exposure to allergens such as pet hair.
* Avoid getting this medication in your eyes.Albuterol and ipratropium in the eyes may cause eye pain, blurredvision, dilated pupils, and unusual color perception. If medicationgets into the eyes, rinse the eyes with water and seek medicalattention.
