What is the most importantinformation I should know about amlodipine? * Amlodipine is used alone or in combination with othermedications to treat high blood pressure and chest pain (angina).Amlodipine is in a class of medications called calcium channelblockers. It lowers blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels so theheart does not have to pump as hard. It controls chest pain byincreasing the supply of blood to the heart. If taken regularly,amlodipine controls chest pain, but it does not stop chest pain once itstarts. Your doctor may prescribe a different medication to take whenyou have chest pain.
What is amlodipine? * Amlodipine is in a class of drugs called calciumchannel blockers. Amlodipine relaxes (widens) the blood vessels (veinsand arteries), making it easier for the heart to pump and reducing itsworkload. * Amlodipine is used to treat hypertension (highblood pressure) and to treat angina (chest pain). * Amlodipine may also be used for purposes otherthan those listed in this medication guide.
Special warnings? * Check with your doctor before you stop taking Norvasc, as aslow reduction in the dose may be needed. * Your doctor will prescribe Norvasc with caution if you havecertain heart conditions or liver disease. Make sure the doctor isaware of all your medical problems before you start therapy withNorvasc. * Although very rare, if you have severe heart disease, youmay experience an increase in frequency and duration of angina attacks,or even have a heart attack, when you are starting on Norvasc or yourdosage is increased. * Safety and effectiveness in children have not beenestablished.
How should I take amlodipine? * Amlodipine comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It isusually taken once a day. To help you remember to take amlodipine, takeit around the same time every day. Follow the directions on yourprescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist toexplain any part you do not understand. Take amlodipine exactly asdirected. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often thanprescribed by your doctor. * Your doctor will probably start you on a low dose ofamlodipine and gradually increase your dose. * Amlodipine controls high blood pressure and chest pain(angina) but does not cure them. Continue to take amlodipine even ifyou feel well. Do not stop taking amlodipine without talking to yourdoctor.
What happens if I miss a dose? * Take the missed dose as soon as you remember.However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed doseand take only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a doubledose of this medication.
What happens if I overdose? * Seek emergency medical attention. * Symptoms of an amlodipine overdose includedizziness, weakness, chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting,unusually fast or slow heartbeat, coma, slurred speech, and confusion.
What should I avoid whiletaking amlodipine? * Follow any recommendations your doctor makesabout diet or exercise. * Use caution when you stand or sit up from a lyingposition, especially if you wake up during the night. You may becomedizzy when changing positions. * Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may further lowerblood pressure and increase drowsiness or dizziness while takingamlodipine.
